WASHINGTON — A longtime John McCain adviser said that #NeverTrump never means never on Tuesday, promising to vote for Hillary Clinton over his party’s likely Republican nominee.
“If my choice is Trump or HRC, then, yes, I’ll vote for her without hesitation,” Mark Salter, who was a senior advisor on McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, emailed the Daily News Tuesday afternoon.
Salter called Clinton the “more conservative” and “least irresponsible choice” before running through a litany of Trump’s controversial positions.
“She won’t take us out of NATO, encourage proliferation, deliberately kill wives and children of Jihadis, slap a 45% tariff on imports, circumvent the 1st [amendment] to make it easier to punish his critics, you get the idea,” he continued. “Finally, and most importantly, he’s temperamentally unfit for the office. She’ll just be disappointing.”
The comments expand on Salter’s promise earlier in the day that he’d back Clinton over Trump.
“The GOP is going to nominate for President a guy who reads the National Enquirer and thinks it’s on the level. I’m with her,” Salter tweeted on Tuesday.
Salter has long been one of Trump’s most prominent — and fiercest — critics within the GOP.
“Nothing anyone could reveal about Trump could get me to change my opinion that he’s an a–hole,” he wrote in an Esquire op-ed in January. “And not a ‘yeah, but he’s our asshole’ kind but rather a cartoon villain, a fake, a cheat, a liar, a creep, a bullying, bragging, bullsh—–g, blowhard kind of a–hole.”
But Tuesday’s statement went a step further.
While some other Republicans who have previously been critical of Trump have softened their tone as he’s emerged as their all-but-certain nominee, Salter is making it clear he won’t budge.
