A Republican lawmaker in Missouri claims pregnancy by rape is a gift from God.
Speaking on proposed legislation that would grant fetuses constitutional rights, Rep. Tila Hubrecht called pregnancy that results from rape a gift from God, while arguing that abortion should be illegal, even in the case of rape and incest.
During debate on a ballot measure that would effectively make abortion illegal in the state of Missouri, Hubrecht said:
It is not up to us to say ‘no just because there was a rape, they cannot exist.’ Sometimes bad things happen — horrible things, but sometimes God can give us a silver lining through the birth of a child.
When God gives life, he does so because there’s a reason, no matter what. I’ve met and talked with the different people who have been conceived by rape. There is a reason for their life.
Under the measure, House Joint Resolution 98, voters would be asked if the state constitution should be amended to “protect pregnant women and unborn children by recognizing that an unborn child is a person with a right to life which cannot be deprived by state or private action without due process and equal protection of law.”
Opponents claim the anti-choice resolution is extreme, potentially outlawing not only all abortion, including in cases of rape or when the life of a mother is in jeopardy, but also many forms of contraception as well.
Rep. Lauren Arthur, D-Kansas City, said:
This bill doesn’t just take the issue over the edge of the cliff, it rockets the issue into outer space.
Thursday House members voted 110-37 to send the bill to the Senate. If approved by the Senate voters will get to decide whether to add “unborn human children at every stage of biological development” to a state constitutional provision that protects the “right to life.”
